Although different variations of toothbrushes have been in existence since 3000 BC, the first mass-produced toothbrush was created in 1780 by William Addis. The first electric toothbrushes hit the American market was in 1960. In 2003, the toothbrush was selected as the number one invention Americans could not live without, according to the Lemelson-MIT Invention Index.
