The islands of French Polynesia can be divided into two distinct groups: the less numerous but larger, high volcanic islands (Society, Tubuai, Marquesas, and Gambier) and the more numerous low coral islands. The coral islands lack soil cover and permanent streams, raising critical problems for agriculture and drinking water. Coconut plantations are virtually the only vegetation capable of growing on the coral islands.
