Shark Attack Myths You have a better chance of being killed driving to and from the beach than being attacked by a shark. Worldwide, there are approximately ten human deaths caused by sharks each year, with Florida in the lead. Shark attacks are declining and the number of serious attacks from 2000-04, as measured by fatality rate (8.9%), has been lower than that of the 1990's (12.7%). Advances in beach safety practices, medical treatment, and increased public awareness of avoiding potentially dangerous situations has helped maintain the the decline of attacks. To avoid the possibility of being bitten, do not wear shiny jewelry, and do not swim after dusk or before dawn. Women shouldn't swim during their cycle. If you are ever attacked, you should be aggressive and hit the shark directly on the nose. And remember, at the beach, sunburn is public enemy number one.
