Despite the popular belief that golf is an acronym for "gentlemen only, ladies forbidden," the word comes from the medieval Dutch "kolf" or "kolve" which means "club." Most probably the word passed to the Scots, whose dialect transformed it into "golve," "gowl" or "gouf."
