Brain Facts The brain of an average adult weighs about 3 pounds (1,300-1,400 g), while the brain of an average elephant weighs about 13 pounds (6,000 g). Just for comparison, the average alligator brain weighs just 0.02 pounds (8.4 g). Neurons are the primary cells of the nervous system- the human brain has about 100,000,000,000 (100 billion) of them. The speed of some nerve impulses can be as high as 390 feet per second (119 m/s) but others, like the pain signals for example, travel at just 2 feet per second (0.61 m/s).
