The Sumerians are the first known brewers, who discovered the fermentation process by chance approximately 6000 years ago. They even had a written recipe for making beer around 4000 years ago- the "Hymn to Ninkasi" (Sumerian goddess of brewery). Babylonians, being the first to have written laws, tried to regulate the beer quality- they decreed that any brewer whose beer is unfit, will be drowned in his own production.
